May 16th, 2011

The cost of auto insurance premiums could go up drastically due to the suspicious claims that are increasingly seen by auto insurance companies. This is a clear sign of fraud which could spike up the premiums. Most people from the industry blame the financial crisis for this.

Bill LeFew, American Family Insurance agent, states that people feel tied up due to the economy. Since these people have lesser options, they have turned to auto insurance fraud.

He also states that insurance fraud had become more prevalent ever since the recession. LeFew has been an insurance agent for the last 34 years.

May 12th, 2011

With the cost of the fuel increasing by the day, an increasing number of people are limiting usage of their cars. There are certain states in the United States where people with limited driving can benefit. North Carolina does not fall under this list of states. However, there are signs that this may change in the near future. The General Assembly in the state of North Carolina is considering a bill which can bring a sigh of relief to people who drive less here.

One of the sponsors of the bill, state Senator Bob Rucho, also a Republican, said that as per the current laws governing auto insurance, there is no scope to offer special discounts to people who drive less.

Top 5 Tips for Sharing the Road Safely with Pedestrians

May 10th, 2011

The numbers for car-pedestrian collisions are sobering. From 2005 to 2009, there were 224,000 collisions involving pedestrians and single-passenger vehicles. Of those accidents, 13,193 were fatal. But even more sobering are the circumstances in which those pedestrians were hit.

Though you might imagine otherwise, the most common scenario in which a pedestrian and car collide is when a person is crossing the road and the vehicle is going straight — this is how it happens 95 percent of the time. In many of those cases (54 percent), nothing is obscuring the driver’s vision. And the driver usually fails to brake.

In fact, drivers who hit pedestrians while traveling straight hit the brakes only 13 percent of the time.

May 6th, 2011

There is a popular program that offers premium discounts to drivers who agree upon installing devices to record their driving patterns. This has worried the privacy advocates who claim that this is highly intrusive and this could also lead to other infringements in the future.

There are around 250,000 Progressive clients who have already participated in the Snapshot Program initiated by the company, and they are now hoping that their good driving habits will help them avail discounts.

As part of the Snapshot program, the drivers agree to install a monitoring device in their vehicle’s onboard diagnostic computer which not only records but also transmits data to Progressive for a period of six months.
