RIBO warns of alleged fraudulent home and auto insurance scheme
October 12th, 2011
Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO), Ontario’s broker regulator, has issued an advisory about an alleged referral program that allows consumers access to a five-year home and auto policy. However, the insurer listed as the provider had no knowledge of the program, nor does it offer the coverage listed.
According to the RIBO advisory, representatives of “Net Wealth Capital Inc.” sold consumers memberships to “Axccess [sic] Lifestyle Membership Corporation” for a $400 fee. One of the listed membership benefits is access to home and auto insurance (two cars) for five years for a premium of $7,797.

Do insurance companies reward motorcycle safety?
October 12th, 2011
Most insurance companies will reward motorcycle safety in some way. If you don’t get any tickets or in any accidents, you’ll see your insurance rates go down just for that. However, insurance companies will also reward you for going out of your way to be safe. For example, GEICO offers a 10 percent discount to your insurance premium if you successfully complete a motorcycle safety course. Nationwide offers a five percent discount for the same thing. Nationwide also offers reimbursement for damage to your helmet or any other safety gear.

Compare quotes for umbrella insurance
October 6th, 2011
Umbrella insurance is still a coverage policy in its most basic nature. Clients are required to pay the monthly or annual premium and the condition of deductibles are still applicable. For those who are searching for the different criteria to compare quotes, they won’t need to look out for any special pointers when purchasing the coverage. However, in place of the usual claim limit, insurance companies will state the additional liability coverage that they’re offering to clients.
The extra coverage that an umbrella policy is able to offer ranges from $1 million to $10 million. It’s first important for clients to put their fingers on an exact figure that they’re looking for so that they will be able to compare the different insurance quotes on same ground. Full Post..

Signed patent reform protects businesses against ‘meritless’ lawsuits
September 25th, 2011
President Obama signed a patent reform bill with a provision that will help prevent “frivolous” lawsuits that increase costs for consumers, a national insurance association says.
Section 18 of the bill (H.R. 1249), sponsored by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), establishes a program at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), where business-method patents can be re-examined to assess their validity.
Before the law, companies that were sued had no meaningful recourse to challenge a patent, according to the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC).
“The financial services industry had a problem with ‘patent trolls’ – organizations designed to secure dubious, low-quality business method patents with the intention of filing onerous lawsuits and securing sizable settlements,” said Jonathan Bergner, director of federal affairs for NAMIC, in a statement.

When to Buy Business Travel Health Insurance
September 23rd, 2011
There’s plenty to plan for when traveling on business, including illness or injury. Is business travel health insurance necessary?
Novice business travelers often assume that workers compensation insurance will cover expenses if medical care is needed while traveling, but that is not always the case. The law varies between states, but in general, the illness or injury must be directly related to the job to covered. For some travelers, a business travel medical insurance policy may be a practical choice.
Some companies offer comprehensive medical coverage plans that provide many of the same services that traditional health insurance covers, such as doctors visits, hospitals stays, tests, x-rays, and surgery.
