Judge Rules Group Can Resume Insuring Nevada Charities

A federal judge in Las Vegas has ruled that the state of Nevada had no right to stop a risk retention group from providing commercial auto insurance policies to charities in that state, clearing the way for the Alliance of Nonprofits for Insurance Risk (ANI) to continue covering its members.

GEICO Rate Filing to Save Calif. Consumers More Than $90 Million

Some California motorists who are insured by GEICO will save an average of $127 a year, thanks to a 10.7 percent drop in the company’s auto policy rates announced Friday.
“It is good news when consumers pay less for premiums and are able to keep more of their earnings,” Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said in a statement announcing the decrease, which should be a pleasant surprise for anyone seeking low cost car insurance policies in the Golden State.
Jones’ department said the rate reduction, which takes effect Aug. 15, will apply to nearly 720,000 policyholders statewide.
GEICO had originally asked for a 4 percent increase in auto premiums.

Auto Insurance Prices Post Minimal Month-to-Month Increase

The latest edition of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) monthly report on price trends shows that the average price of motor vehicle insurance was a mere 0.1 percent higher in June when compared with May.
The new Consumer Price Index (CPI) data indicate that June 2011 car insurance policy costs were 3.8 percent higher than in June 2010.
The average price for all goods measured in the CPI went in the opposite direction.

Worst Cities for Towing Increase Costs Associated with Auto Insurance

A new survey released by the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) revealed that five cities are worse than others when it comes to aggressive towing practices. it was also revealed that these aggressive towing practices are often associated with drivers paying more in expenses related to auto insurance.

Over $1M in Insurance Payments to Be Returned to NC Residents

Miscalculations of insurance rates and surcharges are leading to the return of more than $1.05 million worth of premiums to home, auto and dwelling-fire policyholders in North Carolina, state Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced on Tuesday.
According to the commissioner’s office, more than 11,000 residents were overcharged between 2006 and 2009. The companies that will be issuing the refunds are SAFECO and American States Preferred.
The majority of policyholders that were overcharged had home insurance policies through those insurers, but the largest chunk of cash is going back to the auto coverage policyholders.

DC Gets Access to Progressive’s Snapshot Discount Program

Motorists in the nations capital will soon be able to enroll in a program run by Progressive Insurance that gives greater access to low cost auto insurance prices for policyholders who display habits that are characteristic of lower-risk drivers.
The Snapshot program, which is already available in 38 states, gives policyholders the option to have Progressive monitor their driving data in exchange for the possibility of discounted premiums.
Habits that identify policyholders as lower-risk motorists include driving fewer miles, braking gradually and being on the road at the times of day when accidents are least likely to occur.
Progressive is able to monitor these habits by way of an electronic device that is easily plugged into a port on the insured vehicle.
